1. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park
24898 CA-89, Burney, CA 96013, USA
PEOPLE ARE SAYING:
This state park is situated inside the Cascade Range and Modoc Plateau natural region, and is set in a gorgeous forest. It has five miles of stream and lake shoreline, including Lake Britton, and amazing hikes.
There is also the gorgeous 129 foot Burney Falls waterfall that alone is worth the trip. The campground is also very nice, with a beach, boat ramp, camp store and more.
Great dispersed camping in the Ozark National Forest. Campsites are secluded from each other and have fire rings. Great hiking trails around the bluff with great valley views. Vault toilets at each end of the campground.
As boondockers, our favorite spot is the Presque Isle Campground, on the western end of the park.
It has 50 sites and about half are generator free. This is quiet. You can sometimes hear wolves howl at night and most of your neighbors are in tents, campers, or small RVs.
Then you can drive to Summit Peak and walk a half-mile to the observation tower for the premier panorama of the park.
Finally, down at Presque Isle, hike the 2-mile loop formed by the East and West River Trails that run parallel to the wild and scenic Presque Isle River. Boardwalk and viewing platforms allow breathtaking views of this river. Spectacular waterfalls, cascades, and rapids are just a short walk from the parking area.
Presque Isle Campground's season runs from April 1st – November 30th. Reservable dates are April 1st – October 15th.
