Brasserie mon chou chou Is OPEN Christmas Eve 11-3pm and New Years Eve 10am-11pm
San Antonio Restaurants
Perhaps it's fate that three Frenchmen moved across the world before meeting in San Antonio. Their meeting benefits all of San Antonio through their new French brasserie, Mon Chou Chou. The brasserie, (which is a casual place to eat rather than French fine dining) at the Pearl brings in the crowds. We visited with our neighbors, Joi and David Pierce on Saturday night.
We orderd different items so we could try a variety of the menu. Normally at this point I might tell you what our favorite dishes were, but honestly, everything was fantastic! The Lobster bisque in puff pastry was outstanding, but then so was the mushroom tart and the charcuterie board. The Sandwich au Fromage Raclette is French comfort food at it's finest. The hot melted cheese, slathered on a slice of toasted bread was delicious.
Philippe Place (one member of the ownership team and this page) was quick to share that Raclette should be picked up and enjoyed. Forks and knives just wouldn't be right! Philippe mentioned that he was happy that diners were ordering menu items like rabbit and escargot rather than sticking with steak and more common fare (thought they are happy to serve steak as well!).
We also got a variety of desserts. The cheesecake was perhaps my favorite but the poached pear possessed deliciously complicated flavors like cloves and cinnamon and red wine.
Mon Chou Chou was created by the same folks from Southerleigh and Southerleigh Haute. It's a beautiful building, great menu and super nice people. There is a nice outdoor patio area, if you prefer. I would encourage you to visit soon!
*Mon Chou Chou is pronounced mon shoe shoe and it is a term of endearment, like my sweetheart or my darling.
Mr. Juicy burgers are fast becoming one of the best burgers in S.A. For about the same price as any fast-food meal you get a perfectly sized burger (on a house-baked bun), double-fried fries, and a drink. Upgrade your sandwich with a fried egg or order the “wet” option, meaning it gets a slather of smoky peppercorn sauce (you don’t find that on every corner). Shakes are notable, and the key lime pie is enough to lure us to the corner of San Pedro and Hildebrand any time of day. Pro tip: The dining room is small, so consider going the drive-through route and perching on one of the outdoor picnic tables.
Chela’s tacos is OPEN on Christmas Eve from 7am-3pm and New Years Eve from 7am to 3pm
San Antonio Restaurants
The first time I remember experiencing Chela's Tacos was at their food truck parked along UTSA Blvd. This was about 10 years ago, and the food truck phenomenon hadn't come to San Antonio yet so I could not understand all the people lined up to buy tacos from a truck. That year, the Express-News named them, I think, 4th best new restaurant in the city. That got my attention so I stopped and picked up an order to take home. I remember everything I got was delicious but the Cochinita Pibil taco was life changing! I had never experienced that flavor combination.
Tonight we went to Chela's new brick and mortar restaurant on St. Mary’s at Mulberry. It's in the spot that used to be Joseph's Storehouse Bakery. They haven't been open long so they are still working out the kinks but the food was outstanding. We walked in and were immediately greeted with a huge smile by Luciano. He has been with the restaurant for many years and has a way of making everyone feel very welcome. We started off with a fabulous frozen Margarita. Each one is hand made using only fresh ingredients. And, for now, during happy hour (4- 7 p.m. M-F) they are only $3.50!!! I should probably add a few more exclamation marks! For our entrees, I got a combination platter with a chalupa, flauta, gordita, rice and beans, Everything was good, but the gordita was fantastic. Beverly got the enchiladas verdes which were also excellent.
Chela and Marty Davis were great hosts and let us try a taste of their homemade bloody mary base. We want to come back for brunch soon! Next time we go I think I will order al a carte so I can enjoy more of the chicken cilantro, Cochinata Pibil and gordita. So good!
Tip: The red and green salsas they serve are good, but ask for the spicier red and creamier green sauces -- they will make your tastebuds happy!
In San Antonio, the name Capparelli has meant great Italian food since about 1963. That's when Guy Capparelli came to San Antonio and opened his first restaurant. Today, Capparelli's on Main is led by his granddaughter, Gay Capparelli, using the same recipes that Guy brought over from Italy.
Tonight the restaurant was hopping! As soon as one table left, another round of hungry patrons would take their seat. Bev and I don't get over to the beautiful Monte Vista area often, so it was a treat to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. We started with the house salad that is included with most entrees, along with a basket of toasted garlic bread. Beverly got the linguine shrimp primavera, which features grilled shrimp, summer veggies, and linguine cooked in butter and garlic! My linguine with grilled chicken, sun dried tomatoes, and mushrooms in a white wine butter garlic sauce was delicious with juicy chunks of tender chicken breast. For dessert we split the house made chocolate chip chocolate cake. Dark, dark, dark chocolate cake. Beverly was one happy girl!
There are about 5 Capparelli restaurants around San Antonio and South Texas, some are family, some are not, but they are all independently owned and have different menus. I can't speak for the others, but Capparelli's On Main has been doing it right for many years! #review #recommended #food #delish #dinner #instafood #foodie #sanantonio #restaurant #instagram #instagood
What’s for dinner at Capparelli’s on Main?? Chicken Piccata 😋
Tender thin chicken breast in a lemon cream sauce with capers. Served with a side of spaghetti in red sauce. My stomach is officially growling!
