PEOPLE ARE SAYING:ShiryFounded in 1973 as Nexus, a grassroots artists’ cooperative, Atlanta Contemporary has since become one of the southeast’s leading contemporary art centers. We play a vital role in Atlanta’s cultural landscape by presenting over 20 exhibitions within four seasonal cycles each year, featuring over 100 consequential artists from the local, national, and international art scenes. We are one of the few local institutions that commissions new works by artists, paying particular attention to artists of note who have not had a significant exhibition in the Southeast. We organize 80+ diverse educational offerings annually, unrivaled by other local organizations of our size. We are the only local organization to provide on-site subsidized studio space to working artists through our Studio Artist Program, removing cost as a barrier to the creative process. We present 80+ educational programs and events each year, including Contemporary Cocktails, Contemporary Kids, Contemporary Talks, Curator tours, film screenings, panel discussions, performances, donor excursions, and workshops.Our Studio Artist Program supports local working artists by providing subsidized studio space and by fostering a collaborative environment supportive of the creative process. With over 14,000 works of art in its permanent collection, the High Museum of Art has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American art; significant holdings of European paintings and decorative art; a growing collection of African American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, photography and African art. The High is also dedicated to supporting and collecting works by Southern artists and is distinguished as the only major museum in North America to have a curatorial department specifically devoted to the field of folk and self-taught art. The High Museum of Art is a Division of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, which also includes the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Arts for Learning.
8. Johns Creek Arts Center

JCAC offers more than fifty classes quarterly along with workshops, and summer camps. The Center displays exhibitions of work by regional artist guilds as well as local artists. The gift shop features work by JCAC instructors as well as other area artists. Center hours are 9 – 5 Monday-Friday and 10 -2 on Saturdays.

The Quinlan provides quality art education opportunities for all ages and all stages of artistic development, special events and a summer art camp program for children. Come and browse the fabulous gift shop featuring local artists’ pottery, paintings, glass works and jewelry. During the year the Quinlan is also host to 20 fine art exhibitions featuring solo and group artists and a special Members’ Exhibition each fall. It is also host to the Georgia Art League.

Voted one of the top five places to take children in the Atlanta metro area, the 17-acre property is rich with botanical, artistic and historic treasures. Fifteen themed garden spaces, anchored by the reconstruction era Hiram Butler House, contain more than 4,000 curated plant species. The award-winning “Garden with Wings” butterfly house and pollinator garden promote conservation of beneficial Georgia native plants and insects. The crevice garden displays a gardening style and plant collection rarely seen in the southeastern United States. Robust collections of hydrangeas, camellias, conifers and roses along with woodland and perennial gardens inspire visitors to explore variety for their own landscapes. Blending horticulture and art, the bonsai collection includes more than 70 specimens, diligently trained during monthly work sessions that are open to garden visitors. Thirty remarkable garden sculptures by nationally and internationally known artists add drama to the landscape. Koi ponds, a waterfall, and child-friendly play structures throughout the property round out the experience.

12. The Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center
PEOPLE ARE SAYING:ShiryThe Land at Foxfire comprises over 106 acres on which students have relocated 10 authentic pioneer log cabins and built more than a dozen other structures from period materials, following traditional methods of construction. The property is filled with artifacts, tools, and handcrafted housewares, toys and folk art, providing a glimpse into the lives of the people who tamed and thrived in the Appalachian wilderness more than 180 years ago. The Foxfire archive, stored on The Land and at University of Georgia’s Russell Library, features personal recollections of “old timers” from Rabun County as well as the only known recordings of certain Appalachian dialects.
